Open Web Awards

The 2nd Annual Open Web Awards is only weeks away. The Open Web Awards is the only multilingual international online voting competition that covers major innovations in Web technology. The first Open Web Awards was spread over 50 international blog partners and this year they are aiming higher. Already in just over a week we have 30 blog partners confirmed in 4 languages and 8 countries. Help us expand.

Open Web Awards is the only multilingual international online voting competition that covers major innovations in web technology. Through an online nominating and voting process, the Open Web Awards recognizes and honors the top achievements in 26 categories. This year, we’re partnering with over 100 blog partners, Poll Daddy for extra security and ease of voting and extending the nominations period and voting rounds for greater participation.

The requirements are minimal. Nominations will be held from November 5th till November 18th 2008. The first and final voting rounds will be held from November 19th till December 15th. If you are a blogger and would like to participate please fill out the Blog Partner Application at Mashable

Art Directors Club 2008 Hall of Fame Laureates

ADC LogoThe Art Directors Club today announced the latest group of inductees into the prestigious ADC Hall of Fame. The seven illustrious honorees, representing the fields of advertising, design, architecture, filmmaking, illustration, academia and photography, will be inducted at a black-tie benefit gala dinner on November 6, 2008, at the ADC Gallery in New York, with proceeds going toward ADC scholarship programs.

ADC Hall of Fame laureates for 2008 are:

  • Alex Bogusky, co-chairman, Crispin Porter + Bogusky;
  • Ray Eames (posthumous), designer, architect and filmmaker;
  • Sir John Hegarty, chairman, worldwide creative director, Bartle Bogle Hegarty;
  • Maira Kalman, illustrator, artist, designer;
  • John Maeda, president, Rhode Island School of Design
  • R. Roger Remington, Massimo and Leila Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design, Rochester Institute of Technology;
  • Bruce Weber, fashion photographer.

Doug Jaeger New ADC President

Doug Jaeger, founder, CEO and creative director at design and branding agency thehappycorp global and director of event/digital media project LVHRD, both New York, has been elected as the 57th president of the Art Directors Club, the premier organization for integrated media and the longest-running global creative collective of its kind with membership in design, advertising, interactive and visual communications.

In addition, four new directors were added to the board, two directors were elevated to officers, and ADC executive director Ami Brophy was promoted to CEO.

Jaeger, 33, becomes the youngest president in the ADC’s 88-year history, a move reflective of the organization’s commitment to remain fresh and connected as the leading professional hub for both young and experienced designers and creatives. He succeeds Paul Lavoie, chairman, chief creative officer at TAXI, who made significant headway in enhancing the ADC’s relevancy, currency, visibility and financial health during his three-year term as president.

ADC “Designism 3.0″ Explores the Role of Creatives

ADC Designism 3.0The Art Directors Club (www.adcglobal.org), the longest-running global creative collective of its kind with membership in advertising, design and visual communications, will hold Designism 3.0, its annual forum for creatives and designers to gather and debate their roles in social activism, on October 2, 2008 at the ADC Gallery, 106 West 29th St., New York.

The event, now in its third year, was conceived by Brian Collins, chairman and chief creative, COLLINS: and ADC board member, to explore the responsibility and experiences of designers and creatives in driving social and political change through their work and career focus. This year’s edition is co-produced by Collins and fellow ADC board member Benjamin Palmer, CEO, the barbarian group, New York.

Educators Honored With First Annual ADC Grandmasters Awards

Five renowned educators who have had immeasurable impact on generations of creatives will be honored as ADC Grandmasters by the Art Directors Club (www.adcglobal.org), the premier organization for integrated media and the first global creative collective of its kind with membership in advertising, design and visual communications.

Utilizing the theme “from one came many,” ADC Grandmasters honors current and retired US-based educators who taught for a minimum of 10 years, and whose students (past and present) are currently involved in the industry.

Ever Been Flogged? There’s a Magazine for You!

Don’t consider that work a waste of time or effort - just send it to flogged magazine, as they celebrate good designs that have been flogged in a monthly magazine.

The first issue is now out. Some designers have artistically hidden client logos, whilst others have created a whole new design from their flogged
designs to celebrate frustration. The Editor’s note says “celebrating rejected designs is kinda like playing with a loose tooth, it sort of hurts a little, but it feels good. Most designers are tooth fiddlers.”

BKFK Announces Grand Prize Winner of the National Going Green Challenge

Elizabeth RintelsBy Kids For Kids (BKFK) and The Weather Channel today announced that Elizabeth Rintels, 12, of Keswick, Virginia, won the grand prize in the national Going Green Challenge. Elizabeth won for her “Water Watcher” invention, a smart device designed to monitor and measure water usage.

Realizing just how much water it took to take a shower, Elizabeth began seeking a way to enhance awareness of water usage. After learning that reducing her shower time only by one minute would save approximately 1,000 gallons of water per year, she was driven to find a smarter way of utilizing this valuable resource. As a result, Elizabeth created “The Water Watcher,” a device that can be fastened to any faucet. It signals a red light and sounds a beep every time a half-gallon of water is used.
