Introducing the newest design showcase from HOW magazine: the HOW Poster Design Awards! There are no categories, and it doesn’t matter if your poster was created for yourself, for work or just for fun…we want to see what you can do! So take this wide-open media and run with it—then make sure you submit your work to us by December 1!

10 winners will be featured on the HOW website, get $150 worth of HOW books and receive a 1 year subscription to HOW magazine. You will also receive a graphic to post on your website announcing your winning status. Work must have been created between July 1, 2007 and Dec.1, 2008. Each entry is $25. All entries must be submitted online no later than December 1, 2008. Entries submitted after Dec. 1 require a late fee of $10 per entry. Entries will not be accepted after December 15, 2008.

While Chicago is well known for its architecture, theatre, fine art, public landscaping, and music scenes, there is a significant lack of applied visual arts in public spaces. By focusing on making this exhibition an outdoor one, Chicago hopes to accomplish two important objectives. First, they want posters to be realized as the quintessential public art form, because they engage citizens at street level, requiring an emotional and intellectual response. They also stimulate dialogue and articulation of important issues—social, political, and economic. Secondly, they want to help the City of Chicago craft its international reputation as a proponent of international cooperation and communication—and as a strong civic advocate of design.

All entries must be designed and printed between 1 January, 2006 to 1 March 2008. All entries must be received at the committee office of the Biennial address by post on or before 27 May 2008. Participants must submit TWO copies of each poster. Visit the site to learn more.

GRAPHIC DESIGN INSPIRATIONS will present the works of more than 300 graphic designers and studios from around the world. This compendium, to be published in September 2008, is a part of daab’s inspiration book series. Any commissioned or self-commissioned graphic design work, in print, that has been created in the last two years, in any of following categories:

• Magazine Design (Editorial Design, Special Interest, Fanzines, Student Magazines, etc.)
• Book Design
• Posters
• Music Graphics (LP/CD, etc.)

The deadline for entering the 2008 One Show, One Show Interactive, and One Show Design awards is 31 January 2008. The online entry system is now live and accepting submissions. For the first time in its 33 year history, all three shows will be held during one festival week, with the complete international jury meeting in New York City for a final round of judging the week of the shows.

Within the context of the 19th International Poster and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont, which will take place from 24 May - 6 July 2008, the International Poster Competition is launched, open to any printed poster created since 1 January 2005, whether it be cultural, social, political or commercial. It can be issued either by private commissioners or public organizations. The competition shall be carried out in accordance with the rules and recommendations of the ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design).

Artists are called to create a poster for DUMA KEY (written by Stephen King), and the winning design will be used to advertise DUMA KEY in January 2008, and will be seen on the London Underground and at outdoor sites throughout the UK. The designers of the top ten entries will each receive an exclusive bound proof of DUMA KEY with their name printed on the front cover, and the winner will also receive a copy of the finished poster based on their design.

FiberMark is now accepting entries for the Inspiration at Work 15th Annual Specifier Awards program. Projects that incorporate FiberMark’s specialty cover materials and have been produced in 2007 are eligible for submission. Entries are judged on design, decoration, printing and construction quality, and the relationship of the material to the project.

In addition to the traditional publishing, packaging, menu and presentation categories, the program has been expanded for the 2nd year in a row to include graphic design collateral, including annual reports, brochures, calendars, posters, invitations and more. The FAB Awards is an international Creative Awards program focussed entirely on work done for Food And Beverage brands. It’s the only international Food and Beverage Awards, recognizing creative excellence in the Media: Integrated Campaign, Digital Media, Print, Packaging Design, Press, Poster, Radio, TV/Cinema, Radio, Direct Marketing, and Sales Promotion.

The newest of GD USA competitions puts the spotlight on increasingly critical elements - packaging and instore graphics - that make the difference in how, when and where consumers make the purchasing decision. The competition arises from the backdrop of a cluttered and competitive communications environment in which manufacturers, marketers and retailers are challenged as never before to convey their message, to differentiate themselves and their products. In the inaugural 2006 competition, they had hundreds of exceptional entries running the gamut from packaging to point-of-sale to posters to shopping bags to store signage and branding.

Winners will receive an embossed Certificate of Excellence for each piece selected and become eligible for reproduction in our new Package and Instore Design Awards Annual to be published in March and which will be seen by more than 100,000 at ad agencies, graphic design firms, inhouse departments and more during the course of the year.
